Whee!

The eldritch powers of electricity have been returned to me -- as of 15 minutes ago. I saw some strange people sneaking around the backyard. Turned out to be Georgia Power. They claimed they rang the bell and didn't get a response. It occurs to me that ringing a bell that runs on electricity -- and, frankly, didn't work well anyway -- was not the best option.

I have air conditioning. I have fans on in the rooms that have ceiling fans. I am collecting dirty clothes -- and after all the sweat, they are dirty clothes -- to start laundry.

There are still some areas of Savannah lacking power, but we were among the last areas in Savannah proper to have power restored, so it may be completed by tomorrow. At which point, the people who did all this can go help other parts of the state -- like Jeff Davis county which is still 90% out -- to reclaim the benefits of the modern world.

Keep your fingers crossed that the other house sells soon. I can't afford solar panels until it does.

I don't remember inviting her. Right now we're dealing mostly with rain. The 50 mph winds are due early to mid afternoon.

ETA: the tornado sirens just went off (20:45). I've only heard them in movies before.

We don't have a tornado room set up yet, so we're in the hallway with all the doors closed. We grabbed office chairs, a water bowl and pee pad for the dogs, and put up a baby gate at the end to keep the dogs with us. The house is brick -- which may not matter if the funnel is big enough -- and there's no glass that can get to us directly here.

I am very angry at my sister right now. It'll pass, but for the moment, it exists.

As you know, I'm substitute teaching. I try to do once a week, more if Mom doesn't have too many doctor's appointments, and I only take the days when Sis has office hours. Why? Because she can come home after she finishes teaching and do office hours via zoom. She rushes back to be here by 2. I get home around 4, usually having picked up a coffee at Starbucks for Mom and/or ingredients for dinner. Since Mom rarely wakes before 10, she's really only alone for 4 hours.

Long rant ensues under the cut. )

Cold means something different here. It's been in the upper 20s Fahrenheit in the mornings this week and hasn't gotten much above 50F which would be a balmy day in early spring in Boston, but is fricking cold down here.

I hadn't understood that even if we have electricity (Thank the developers for buried powered lines!), our internet service would cut out continually. It's messed with my access all week, including our phone service and cable tv. I just can't wait for this week to be over.

UPDATE: I'm at Urgent Care with Mom because she has chest pain and can't catch her breath.

I know a good chunk of my friends list is either in Boston or greater Washington DC, so I figure I probably shouldn't mention that it's been 82F (27.7C) here in Savannah and the pollen count is high. 😁

On a more serious note: I'm worried about all of you. I hope you have everything you need so that you don't have to go out in the ice and cold. If there is anything I can do, please let me know.

I have a snow drift on my balcony. I decided it was time to close the window.

We're getting the nearly 2" an hour that was promised. As of an hour ago, Capitol Hill had 16" of snow. This is getting interesting.

I just came back from seeing Inception.

It hit 103F (39C) with a high enough humidity that the "real feel" was over 110F. The movie theater didn't have air conditioning.

I also had an eye appointment today.
