Heat

I just came back from seeing Inception.

It hit 103F (39C) with a high enough humidity that the "real feel" was over 110F. The movie theater didn't have air conditioning.

I also had an eye appointment today.

I thought I'd had an appointment two years ago. Nope. It's been five. The optometrist saw me for contact lenses as well as to check my prescription. She's given me two sample pairs.

The first pair we tried (and I have a sample set to work with over the next fortnight) correct both eyes the same way so that I see distance. I may have to wear my computer glasses (which have prisms to align my eyes better) for all reading.

The second -- well, pair isn't quite the correct description, right eye lens is better -- would correct the right eye for reading leaving the left eye to see distance. She had me do this combination second because it nauseates most people at first even if it turns out to be the better solution to the problem of seeing optimally.

It was like coming home. When my eyes first started diverging, I had 20/18 vision in my left eye and something absolutely ridiculously nearsighted (I want to say 20/400) in my right eye. One eye did all my distance work; one eye did all my reading. Pouring clear liquids was/is an issue and I have to be careful parallel parking, but in general stereo vision is overrated. I didn't start wearing glasses full time until I was 28.

I don't know why none of the doctors suggested this before. I was less nauseous with this combination than with the other (though I'll still experiment with both before making the ultimate decision as to which to buy). I got through several hours including a movie in a stupidly hot theater without a hitch. I'll need to sit to the right side of the room, as I do naturally thanks to having had divergent vision in my eyes since I was 11, but really, this was great for me.

I also got a new pair of glasses. I spent close to an hour trying to pick frames. My eyes are very round and tend to look well in very round glasses. I prefer men's styles to women's in general -- less froufrou and wider lenses. The women at the shop were very helpful in keeping me from my most egregiously unfashionable options. The lady I worked with the most gave her blessing to the pair I selected when she said, "You smile every time you put them on."

They're very rectangular, black frames. They were worried about a woman my age being too conservative for the strong look they project. But I smile when I wear them, and they're wide enough that I can use my eyes expressively without constantly seeing my frames.

I pick them up in two weeks. Maybe someone can take a picture. *G*
