What a New Year

My uncle had two wives and two sets of kids. His youngest son (second son by second wife) just had a daughter whom I got to meet over the holidays. The older son by the second wife is getting married in early May.

Uncle only has one daughter who was born halfway between me and Sis. She had a kid in the 1980s by her first husband and has a son by her second husband at the same time her eldest was having a daughter.

Girl!Cousin's eldest son was killed in a car accident on the 101 in California just three hours ago.

I'm heartbroken for her.

crow&: we're so sorry, that's devastating. one of our loved ones also experienced a devastating loss over the holidays and something about the time of year makes it feel especially difficult. condolences to you, her, and the rest of the family.

I went to more funerals last year than I had in any given year of my life before.

It's weird what goes through your head. My first thought was that the 101 is so much safer than the 5.

Her older brother called us, and my first thought was that Alzheimer!Auntie had something happen to her. Or Uncle had. We were just in Blacksburg for his 93 birthday. You just don't expect the next family death one hears about to be 40-ish when so much of the family is over 60.
