The sprained ankle meant I had to take Leave Without Pay and I had no leave time credited to take the hour and a half I'd have needed to attend.

Yes, this means that unlike the Mayor and our Delegate, I didn't get arrested. I'm not certain whether I'm happy or sad about it.

Sorry to hear this.

On a different note, what email are you using currently? I sent you an email a while back, and it just now occurred to me that you probably changed accounts after then spam thing, and that probably the reason you haven't answered it is that you never actually got it. (I've been meaning to phone you to follow up for about a week now, and I always forget. I figure I should call at lunchtime, or in the evening before it gets to late, and always get sidetracked and miss the window.)

I generally hold back a little from weighing in on the politics of other nations. I'm aware there's often tons of context that me, as an outsider isn't aware of so there's always the chance of making comments that are pig ignorant and/or offensive. But I'm making an exception for this. I have rarely been so appalled in all my jaded, cynical life by the recent goings on in DC. And I think it's downright *scary* how little it's been reported on in the world's media. The mayor of DC being arrested is something I think would be a pretty huge story but there's nothing on it on the BBC (for example).

I wish there was more concrete things I could do :( The lot of the people of Washington DC is so shitty, politically.

As [livejournal.com profile] siderea said when I saw her at Arisia, "You're living in a third world country."

If Toulouse or Aberdeen didn't have representation in their respective parliaments, people would be all over the French and British governments -- with Americans at the forefront. But it's the US. It's enshrined in the Constitution -- even if the circumstances have changed -- and Americans think it's okay that 600,000 fellow Americans have the duties but not the rights of citizens.

It's very shocking. And it's one thing (one very bad thing!) to have ended up with an unfortunate situation because of history but quite another for those in power to deliberately exploit it, knowing there can be no comeback. It reminds me of this exchange from "Whatever happened to Baby Jane"

Joan Crawford: You wouldn't be able to do these awful things to me if I weren't still in this chair!

Bette Davis: But you *are*, Blanche! You *are* in that chair!
