There's a DC Voting Rights Protest this afternoon/evening. The timing is to coincide with the vote on the bill to take away our ability to spend our local taxes on needle exchanges and on abortion. I've volunteered to take part in the civil disobedience and to be arrested.

It will probably be a $50 fine. But I'm still nervous. I've never had more than a parking ticket before. Even though this is a misdemeanor, it's big to me.

I feel that I have to be willing to stand on my principles, and that sometimes that may mean standing somewhere I don't want to be -- like the processing center of my local police station.

But I'm scared.

I did it.

I was arrested sometime after 7:30 p.m. with seven other women. I was the first in the wagon and, along with a DC Councilwoman, the first released.

I'll go into greater detail tomorrow.

Thank you for all the kind comments on my previous post.

ETA: The Fox News footage in the comments (thank you[livejournal.com profile] siderea) shows me twice. I'm in a bright blue trench coat and can be seen in the background when Councilwoman Alexander is talking; and it's my wrists that shown when we were being cuffed. I have the bruises this morning to prove it! (For the record, the Capitol Police were unfailingly polite and gentle. I did some unconscious struggling against the cuffs which is how I got the bruises.)
