On Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] eanja and I went to New York to see Rock n Roll by Tom Stoppard.

I like Stoppard, but my main reason for going was Sinead Cusack, an actress I've admired for many years. She's a year or two older than I am, and perhaps the sexiest woman I've ever seen. It helps that she's a damned good actress on top of it.

Since I knew [livejournal.com profile] eanja was a huge Stoppard fan, I thought I'd offer her tickets as a birthday present.

We got up before 5 a.m. to make it to South Station on time for our train. It was a nice ride, and we made our way to the Natural History Museum, mostly because I wanted to see the Hayden Planetarium.

Making our way there included walking from Penn Station to the museum via Central Park. [livejournal.com profile] eanja found an interesting fruit -- or rather, I found it, but [livejournal.com profile] eanja was fascinated by it -- which she documented. If anyone knows what tree produces a lurid green seed pod that looks like a brain, please let one or the other of us know. Right now, I'm calling it Sylar fruit, for those of you who watch Heroes.

The museum was terrific. In the end, I chose not to go to the planetarium because there were some minor strobe effects and the last thing I wanted was a migraine. We did explore the space center a bit, and saw some great exhibits. The AMNH is an odd mixture of very modern and extremely old-fashioned exhibits. I found myself charmed by the dioramas showing how apples were grown in Dutchess County. On the other hand, there were some stunning interactive exhibits in the biodiversity hall.

The staff finally kicked us out at 6, and we elected to walk back through Central Park to 5th Avenue and up to 45th Street to our theater. This is when we discovered that the stagehands were on strike and the performance was canceled.

I wanted to cry. I'll get my money back, but, dammit, I wanted to see the play.

On the other hand, we did get a great meal at Scarlatto's. They were kind enough to let us in even though we were nearly three hours early for our reservation. [livejournal.com profile] eanja had Pappardelle with Venison and I had a lovely Ossobucco with saffron risotto.

After going to Times Square, we found a pedalo (bicycle rickshaw -- I hadn't ridden in one since I was a child in Saigon) to get us back to Penn Station. It was more expensive than a cab, but sometimes you have to pay for the adventure.

All in all, I had a great, if exhausting, day.

Wow, that was a lot of walking! So glad you had fun; bummer about the show, though!

About six miles or so by the end of the day. More if you add in all the walking inside the museum. But it was great. I miss that kind of walking.

I'm still sniffly about the show. I'll get over it. *G*

I love that you are good w/ lots of walking... So few people are, and if you aren't in a hurry, it's so much nicer a way to get places, especially new places where you want to be able to look around a bit.

Aw. When this post started, I was thinking. "Oh no. She went to see something on broadway?"

At least you had a lovely meal and an adventure anyway.

I get a teddy bear?

Yeah, the strike wasn't even official when we left Boston, so there's no way we could have known. But now you know why I was too exhausted to beta yesterday.

You get a teddy bear, Daniel, and chocolate! :-)

And yes, definitely see what would cause your exhaustion. You don't know what it means to me to have you willing to look at the fic last minute in the first place. :-)

I saw Sinead Cusack and Derek Jacoby in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING in 1984. The show was at UCLA and was part of the Olympic Arts Festival, and the next day they gave a public talk. Of course she was terrific.

That was a magical production. Did you get to see the Cyrano de Bergerac they were doing at the same time?

Oh, man, what a bummer about the performance! I'm glad that you at least got a fabulous meal and a good time at the museum.

Is Sinead Cusack any relation to John and Joan?

Oh, and is this the tree in question?

Yes, that's it. The fruits are very cool and weird.

Sinead Cusack is the daughter of Cyril Cusack of The Abbey Theater in Dublin (also Mrs. Jeremy Irons). As far as I know the Chicago Cusacks are no direct relation.

It was a good day. And I hope to get to see the show sometime.
