Someone just spent half an hour of their time giving me advice on how to approach jobs and interviews in Eugene.
They were specific about the culture, made suggestions about appropriate attire, and answered questions. This woman didn't know me from Eve. I'd called her because a friend of
jerminating thought there might be some jobs available with her organization. There aren't. But she took time and made suggestions on how to approach employment here.
It was a kind thing.

Date: 2005-08-09 04:22 am (UTC)That was very nice of them. :-)
I never get that, not even from temp agencies. I have to ask, and then they look at me like I've just popped out of an egg or something. :-(

Date: 2005-08-10 11:57 pm (UTC)It amazes me the number of people who don't get the idea of "local culture." I would never go to an interview in the South without full make-up and polish on my nails. Once I got the job, I'd go back to buffed nails and lipstick, but Southern ideas of what's right for an interview are pretty specific.
My sister told me not to wear pantyhose in LA. So few people wear them unless they're covering up something. In Boston, glasses are a good thing. Out West here, they seem to prefer contacts or those glasses whose frames are so ultrahip that they're too narrow to see through.
But yeah. I don't get why the agencies just don't hand out guidelines and have some clue.

Date: 2005-08-11 06:32 am (UTC)My main problem is how to dress. I'm *horrible* at it. Even if I have the money to spend, I'm utterly hopeless in what to choose for myself. The only thing I've learned is what colors look good on me, but styles, accessories, etc.? God. May as well wear burlap with a bag over my head and call it done for all the good my "job" tastes go.
Then there's the thing about my hormones lately that have me breaking out in cystic acne--some sort of mix between pre-menopausal hormones and allergy. :( It kinda puts me out of most public jobs, which is okay since I'm horrible at that. Now, if I can get a job at home, I'd be stylin'. But unless I get a job in a warehouse or shop--which I'm not likely to be able to do any more--I'm kinda stuck.
In other words, I get it, and I'm crossin' my fingers you get something as soon as. ::sighs::

Date: 2005-08-10 11:52 pm (UTC)Knowledge like that will probably keep me from saying "I need work" or "I'd be happy just to have health insurance." Saying that Eugene seems like a lovely city that I'd like to stay in for awhile will be fine.
