Vive La France!

Allons enfants de la Patrie,
Le jour de gloire est arrivé!
Contre nous de la tyrannie,
L'étendard sanglant est levé, (bis)
Entendez-vous dans les campagnes
Mugir ces féroces soldats?
Ils viennent jusque dans nos bras
Egorger nos fils et nos compagnes!
Aux armes, citoyens,
Formez vos batallions,
Marchons, marchons!
Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons!
I've been sickened by one reaction to the London bombings. The idea posited by some talking head that the French should have gotten the Olympics so that they would have had to worry about "backpack bombers" rather than the British.
The United States would not exist today if not for France. Their help during the Revolution turned the tide. The early French explorers paved the way for Lewis and Clark. The Louisiana Purchase allowed us to expand.
The French gave us the Statue of Liberty.
Without the U.S., France might not today be a Republic. Our example allowed them to keep trying through failed republics, monarchies, and multiple Bonapartes.
France has never pretended to set its policies by anything other than, occasionally enlightened, self-interest. When has the United States ever cut its policies to other countries' fashions? We should respect them as our earliest ally and acknowledge our mutual independence.
I'm off to read "The Rights of Man"
