Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin in the first cover I saw

I think this book is the best ever written in English. I had to search to get this image. My books are in DC, and I don't know if my copy of Winter's Tale there is my first copy (this cover) or if that copy is stored in Boston.

This is the book that I picked up on a whim for a train ride between Bonn and Heidelberg (I lived in Mannheim, but I was supposed to stay with my parents that night). I was so engrossed that I ended up in Karlsruhe and had to wait over an hour for the next train back to Heidelberg. It's the only book that I finished and immediately began again on page 1.

That's a strong recommendation. I may check it out.

I just wandered in here via network. I have loved this book ever since I first read it in my teens, and I think it easily goes in my all-time top 10 even today. The language is so utterly gorgeous, and I will never forget how much the ending made me cry when I first read it. In fact, I may be due for a reread.
