This Year's Yuletide Stories
Dec. 31st, 2015 08:27 pmMy story:
Fandom: Talk of the Town - Movie
Story: I'm getting tired of people making up my mind for me by melodiousb (http://archiveofourown.org/works/5475905)
This is a movie that I thought I'd seen years ago. When I watched it last summer, I realized I'd been wrong. I loved it. This was one of the few times I could see a real OT3 evolving from the relationships on screen. My author was a real godsend. I know that my request was sent to the pinch hit list both on 12/15 and on 12/20. She came up with something lovely in very short order. I love it, and I hope people discover both the movie and her story.
Original Assignment:
Fandom: Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner
Story: Delicate Times (http://archiveofourown.org/works/5131526/chapters/11807816)
I was thrilled to get Swordspoint. I've offered for it most years that I've participated in Yuletide. Vae had a simple request: before the book for Richard and Alec. I did my best.
Pinch Hitter Gift:
Fandom: The Martian - Movie
Story: Re-Entry (http://archiveofourown.org/works/5449295)
Every year there are people on the pinch hit list who, for whatever reason, didn't sign up for Yuletide and are therefore not getting a gift themselves. Some of these pinch hitters post at the community a prompt or two for people to pick up randomly. YeomanRand made a request for The Martian, specifically for how Mark Watney re-assimilates after over a year alone on Mars. It wasn't until I posted the story, that I realized she requested the book, not the film, but she said it was fine.
Pinch Hits:
Fandom: Murder in the Cathedral by T.S. Eliot
Story: 26 December 1170 (http://archiveofourown.org/works/5163284)
What is it about Eliot? A thousand word sermon in blank verse just before the King makes his "troublesome priest" comment.
Fandom: North and South - TV miniseries based on the book by Elizabeth Gaskell
Story: Cotton's Future (http://archiveofourown.org/works/5370134) Explicit
This was a fascinating series, and I enjoyed the book, too. This is the only explicit story this year. grav_ity requested "married people doing married people things" and I attempted to give it to her. This is set after the book and series end -- about four years later. Margaret and John take a trip to secure their sources of raw materials. I learned a great deal about the 19th century cotton industry researching this one.
Fandom: Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare
Story: Smiles and Skirmishes (http://archiveofourown.org/works/5404376)
This is how Beatrice and Benedick became friends and then ended up in their merry war. All but the last scene is set before the beginning of the play.
After 12/15:
Fandom: The Lost Prince by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Story: Neutrality (http://archiveofourown.org/works/5468882)
I'd picked up the book for my Kindle sometime this autumn. I hadn't read it yet, but I thought I could handle reading it and writing it. It's not one of Burnett's best, but it was very interesting. The story deals with the aftermath of a kingdom restored just as Europe is about to go to war. In some ways, I think this might have been a more remembered book if it hadn't been published in 1915.
Fandom: Valdemar Series by Mercedes Lackey
Story: Point of View (http://archiveofourown.org/works/5457251)
The point of view is that of a young Companion up to the moment of Choosing. Rolan makes an appearance as a sort of mentor/wise uncle figure.
Fandom: The Librarians - TV Series, also The Librarian movies that led to the series.
Story: Charlene (http://archiveofourown.org/works/5461415)
Charlene is played by Jane Curtin. This story posits that she was a Guardian before becoming the Library's administrator which has certainly been implied by the source material. This is her joining the adventure.
Fandom: The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension - Movie
Story: The International Space Station and the Hong Kong Cavaliers (http://archiveofourown.org/works/5477654)
Rawhide's writing again. This is how New Jersey settled into his role as a Hong Kong Cavalier.
After 12/20:
Fandom: Top Hat - Movie
Story: Couture and the Theater (http://archiveofourown.org/works/5476406)
halotolerant wanted a story about the very slashy relationship between Horace Hardwicke and Alberto Beddini. I did my best to accommodate with some assistance from Horace's wife, Madge.
Fandom: Anne of Windy Poplars by L.M. Montgomery
Story: The Tower Room (http://archiveofourown.org/works/5479637)
Rina wanted snowed-in story. She also wanted romance and suggested that sharing a bed for warmth might be something they did. I chose to put it during the Windy Poplars era. I think it worked. I certainly hope so.
Fandom: Kim by Rudyard Kipling
Story: A Piece in the Game (http://archiveofourown.org/works/5497982)
I'd read the book over twenty years ago, closer to thirty. I reread the book before writing the story; I'd forgotten how good it was. I took a deep breath and did my best with Kipling's style. This is another "after the end" story, and another one set in the shadow of the Great War. I also did some very quick research on early 20th century Indian history.
After Reveals:
Fandom: Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries - TV Series
Story: Turning Points (http://archiveofourown.org/works/5542091)
Two pinch-hits went out after the reveals. I picked up this one. plalligator requested a D/s relationship between Inspector Jack Robinson and Miss Phryne Fisher.
