I didn't do as much as I'd hoped.

My train was late on Saturday and I'd had very little sleep the couple of days before, so all I did was see a movie and then see Alan Cumming in MacBeth in the evening.

The play was stunningly good -- easily the best production of the Scottish play I've ever seen. There were a few minor special effects, mostly around Banquo's ghost, but the rest was three actors, minimal props, and the text. Of those three actors, two had very few lines mostly toward the end of the play. Virtually every word of the first four acts was spoken by Cumming.

The play was heavily cut, of course, but the only part I missed was the porter's speech. There was a spot where it could have been included, but I understand the choice to delete it rather than dissipate the tension of the play, especially since it was performed without an interval. Cumming was stunning and has joined my rather short list of actors I will see in anything (Patrick Stewart, Hugh Quarshie, Tom Wilkinson, Kenneth Branagh, Sinead Cusack, Emma Thompson, Angela Bassett, and Chiwetel Ejiofor are the others).

Sunday was spent with [livejournal.com profile] linaerys. We had a great brunch at a vegan restaurant then spent several hours at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Among other things, we saw the classic bronze statue The Boxer which I tried to see many years ago in Rome. It was out of the museum when I was there, so finally getting to see it was a deep thrill. He's beautiful. We then went to see the Sleeping Eros which didn't grab me as much. We also took in the punk exhibit, and I had a minor revelation that the current high fashion homages/re-imaginings of punk are very submissive takes on what was essentially a dom style. I could tell whether an outfit was original or recent by whether the shoes were low heeled/oxfords or stiletto platforms.

I had a great time talking about everything under the sun with [livejournal.com profile] linaerys, too.

That night, I had an appetizer and a free drink at the hotel and went to bed early then slept late the following morning. I needed that.

The movie I saw on Saturday was Now You See Me. I thought it was fun and really enjoyed the fact that it wasn't a sequel, re-imagining, or adaptation from other sources. It was an original heist film with some fun stage illusions. I know that many of them were CGI rather than actual illusions, but the movie is fast paced and mostly intelligent. I can't think of too many current summer movies to say that about.

I know you're busy, but I wanted to see what might be available. We only get 4 or so operas a year here in DC.
