I didn't always agree with his views, but I loved his "take no prisoners" attitude toward expressing them. He was a marvelous essayist.

Yeah. There's a "truth to power" voice that seems to be waning in modern journalism.

My current favorite muckraker / polemicist is Matt Taibbi, who often has the only material worth reading in Rolling Stone.

He certainly had his own way of looking at things, but I always enjoyed reading his articles (mostly the ones in 'Vanity Fair'). His was a singular voice and will be missed.

I think he did better with the longer form -- such as Vanity Fair articles -- than the shorter form at Slate, but I always liked his turn of phrase.
