Senate opponents of democracy in Washington, DC may try to attach restrictions to DC's local budget over the will of our local leaders during the upcoming vote on a 2012 appropriations bill. We need your help.
Please call Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Democrat - NV) and urge him to oppose DC budget riders in the Senate Appropriations bill. We also need you to forward this message to your family, friends and colleagues in Nevada today.
The Senate is expected to take up a 2012 Appropriations bill later this week. This bill will likely include the Financial Services Appropriations bill (which includes DC's local budget). There is a possibility that anti-democracy amendments will be added to the DC budget bill. These riders could re-impose a ban that prevents the District of Columbia from spending, for example, its own locally-raised tax dollars on reproductive health or syringe exchange programs designed to stop the spread of HIV-AIDS. Congress can impose these riders, unfortunately, because DC has limited "Home Rule" authority over its own locally-raised funds.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has the power to prevent these riders from being added onto the final DC budget bill. We need to impress upon him that you are passionate about protecting your Home Rule rights!
Call Senator Reid at his DC office, 202.224.3542. If you are a constituent from Nevada, please make that clear!
When you call, tell the staffer:
You are calling on behalf of residents of the District of Columbia who do not have a voice or a vote in the Senate. Urge them to not allow any amendments to the District of Columbia's 2012 budget
These calls and our protests this year are making a difference. Thank you for helping us defend democracy for Americans living in Washington, DC!
