Our IT Department SUCKS!

I've been in the field this week at a new center. One of our customers used an infected thumb drive on a networked computer on Tuesday. I caught it. I cleaned that computer and asked the IT department to run virus scans on the computers at the center including the server.

They said they had.

I checked my email at the office. And now my email is infected.

I found out the virus detections hadn't been updated in 77 months. I'm in the process of updating the detections on my office computer (I'm not in the field today because we're moving offices and I'm packing up.). And I will run every available scan on my home computer tonight to make certain I don't propogate the damned thing.

I promise not to check my email in the field again. I can't trust our networks.

Yeah, I wondered about that. Your email was sending out obviously spam messages. 27 MONTHS is a pretty damn long time not to update viral detections. That's very frustrating. And yeah, your IT Department does pretty much suck.

Good luck with the move.

Not 27, SEVENTY SEVEN. I'm just flat out appalled.

77? 77?!

That's like centuries in IT land. I mean, that almost pre-historic. WTH????

(And I think I may need reading glasses. Damn, that really did look like a "27" to me... Ah, the joys of getting older...)

That's right, they haven't updated the virus detections since sometime in 2003.

Well, I hope they've all updated their resumes, because they may be forced to leave Planet Denial for the real world..the one where you update your virus detection like once a week or more often. Did they think they just had to give the system a 'flu shot'???? That's just crazy!

I just feel like such an idiot. I run the scan weekly, but didn't know it wasn't being updated. At least my Spybot scan, which is only on my office computer, is updated weekly.

That's really terrible. Considering the lifespan of many it systems, I wonder if they never actually have updated the definitions EVER and these were the ones that came with the system.

Also, speaking of viruses, did you see the big kefuffle with all the Gawker accounts being hacked? I thought of you and wondered if that had been going on for a lot longer than the few days they copped to when the story broke.
