There's been a lot of Death this week
Aug. 29th, 2026 01:21 pmSis and I had just barely watched Girls, Girls, Girls in honor of Shelley Fabares and seen Who Mourns for Adonais? to mark Leslie Parrish's passing, when the news of Dolly Parton's death hit.
I hadn't expected to weep. Shed a small tear that a voice from the radio at summer camp had gone, but not full out weep. But weep I did. I also remembered the $1M she gave early in the Covid crisis for research. The Moderna vaccine wouldn't exist without her contribution -- which was more than the U.S. government had given at that point.
Someone in one of my links suggested that the date 9/25 be marked as Dolly day in the spirit of May the 4th as Star Wars day. Rather than seeing the movies, though people can watch them, make a donation to charity. Imagination Library has a donation button. I'm certain there are other charities that Dolly was associated with, and if you want to donate to Habitat for Humanity or Feeding America or World Central Kitchen which is currently working with the flash flood victims in Nepal, I don't think Miss Dolly would mind.
We've also watched Earth 2 and Clue to honor Tim Curry and will probably get to The Many Worlds of Winnie the Pooh for Peter Cullen over this weekend.
ETA: the local cafe had a photo of Dolly with a cup of coffee with a note to have "a cup of ambition" for breakfast.
