The 42 Meme

This is a Douglas Adams appreciation meme: post a quote of his you are fond of.
***
He was very definitely looking for something.
He very definitely didn't know what.
The realization that he didn't know exactly why he was doing what he was doing suddenly chilled and electrified him. He turned slowly like a fridge door opening.
There was no one there, at least no one that he could see. But he knew the chill prickling through his skin and detested it above all things.
He said in a low savage whisper, "If anyone can hear me, hear this. My mind is my center and everything that happens there is my responsibility. Other people may believe what it pleases them to believe, but I will do nothing without I know the reason why and know it clearly."
***
There's more to the passage, but for some reason the page it's on is forbidden in the "search within the book function" at Amazon. This was something I needed to hear for my own life when it was published. Not that I'm psychic, but people were messing with my mind and I needed to know the reasons. This passage solidified what had been a vague feeling and helped me fight.

Train crash in CA
Sep. 13th, 2008 12:01 pmI know people who took that train. Most people at the travel agency drove, but maybe a dozen took that commuter train and had someone pick them up. Of that dozen, at least three took the 4:23 every day.
I'll be checking the LATimes website for a list of the injured.
Thank heavens it didn't start a brush fire.

I'm supposed to be reading Moby Dick -- which I'm enjoying, by the way -- but my copy of Nation, the latest Pratchett, arrived today, so I'm reading it instead.
There's a lot of water in it too, so at least I'm carrying on a Moby Dick theme.
People talk about all the useless stuff in my head, but this pretty much sums up my feelings.

"She was always superstitious about remembering useful things she'd been told, at least outside lessons. You would be bound to need it one day. It was a test the world did to make sure you were paying attention."
