Still Sick

I called an ambulance at 2 a.m.

They were surprised by how much vomiting I'd done. Then they found out I'd had even more diarrhea and were shocked.

They put me on an IV to combat dehydration, added an anti-nausea medication once the doctor saw me, and finally sent me home around 8 a.m. with strict instructions to eat very lightly today and probably tomorrow. I have more of the anti-nausea medication and can take it sub-lingually in an hour.

Since everything can have a silver lining...

For the first time in the fifteen years I've lived in DC off and on, I saw the cherry blossoms at their peak. The cab driver who picked me up outside GW Hospital (very nice, btw) took the route past the Jefferson Memorial to get me to my local CVS to pick up my prescription. Just glorious.

Now that I'm home, I hope I can get some rest. The last night was not restful.

Wow. That sounds dreadful- I really hope the medication helps and you can get some rest(and also that this turns out to be one of those virulent but short lived things, and you feel much better soon.)

Rest accomplished. Nutrition, not so much yet. Short-lived, well, I've crossed the threshold from probable food poisoning to probable viral gastro-enteritis, so I should be better by Tuesday at the latest.

Well, I figure it will take you while to get your strength back even when you can keep food down. But assuming it's a viral thing, I' hope you're lucky and it's one of the 2-day only kind.

That would be so great. I'd be feeling better by this time tomorrow. *G*

!!! Best wishes on a speedy recovery. I'm kinda surprised they kicked you out in only 6hrs. Did they run any tests?

They took blood and urine, but I have no idea what they ran or didn't run.

I really thought they were going to keep me long enough to give me a second saline IV, but they didn't. Once I could keep water down, with the anti-nausea medication, they were talking about releasing me as soon as the first bag went.

I am so sorry you are going through this. Rest. I hope you feel better very, very soon.

The cherry blossoms sound lovely though.

They were.

I'm a little miffed at my health insurance, though. They decided the physician should only give me 12 pills instead of the 30 he actually prescribed.

I'd hoped to be able to write today, but all I've managed is a little sleep.

As as Emergency physician, I always used to be a little unsympathetic to people who came to hospital with D+V. Weaklings, I always thought!!

Then life turned around and bit me in the butt, and I ended up in an Indian hospital, unable to stand due to weakness due to 24 hours of D+V

Eye's opened BIG TIME.

Now, I'm reaaaly sympathetic-- and honestly, some fluids, some antiemetics, and some anti-spasmodics, and it can make you feel 50% better (time needed for the other 50%).

Eat v lightly, avoid fruits and fruit juices till you're better and no dairy for at least the first 24 hours. Some simple ORS* to drink.

GET WELL SOON

sorry, I just realised this sounds a bit bossy-- habit, but seriously, REST, RELAX and RECUPERATE

*oral rehydration solution

If this is a simple viral illness (which it sounds like???) then fingers crossed, you'll be all better in a couple of days.

They couldn't decide if it was food poisoning or viral gastro-enteritis. I think the latter has won just because I'm still so sick and having a hard time keeping things in my system.

I called the ambulance because the violence of the vomiting nearly brought on a tachycardic attack (I have SVT) and I kept seeing headlines about Judy Garland and Elvis. Damned if that was how I went. *G*

I don't mind a little bossy. ;-)

Merciful heavens, that's scary stuff. I'm glad you made the call and got some medical help. All available digits crossed that the meds will do their thing and help you get some rest while you get better. *careful hugs*

I did sleep today and will go attempt to do so again now-ish. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to work tomorrow -- like 100%.
