The first same-sex couples are applying for their marriage licenses today. With the waiting period, the first weddings may be performed on Tuesday.
We join Massachusetts, Iowa, Connecticut, Vermont, and New Hampshire in permitting same-sex marriage.

The legal challenges -- there have been at least three -- have all been circumvented by the fact that DC's human rights act states referenda are not permitted on human rights issues. Congress had thirty of their working days to put their fingers in and chose not to.
If you feel strongly about this issue, I recommend you not live in Virginia. Their Defense of Marriage Act is the narrowest definition in the country -- it will not even permit the Commonwealth to recognize marriages from other states.
Here's hoping a future City Council doesn't try to rescind it, but I think that's unlikely.
