The first female four-star has been nominated. Congratulations, General Dunwoody.
When I was nine, we visited friends of my parents. The woman of the pair, a former WAC, had been forced to resign her commission, she'd attained the rank of lieutenant colonel, when she married. On this particular evening, a friend of theirs was leaving as we arrived. My father stood straighter, not that he ever slouches, and introductions were made all around. The woman left, and we had a pleasant evening.
On the way home later that night, Dad told me that Colonel Hoisington had just been promoted to general, the first woman -- along with Anna Mae Hays -- to achieve the rank.
I was so sure there were no more barriers.
