I'm going to be buying an HD TV. It comes equipped with a progressive scan DVD player.

A) Can I play my current DVDs on it?
B) Will it play HD-DVDs?

The internet "answers" assume a level of knowledge I don't have.

Thank you.

So next question. If I buy an HDTV and a separate HD-DVD player, will the DVD player work with regular DVDs? *she asks hopefully*

Yep! Definitely should.

Be aware, it looks like in the HDDVD vs BlueRay fight, BlueRay has won. You might want to wait a bit longer before shelling out the cash to see what shakes out. Also, most combo machines get crappy lifetime ratings as one part of the unit tends to crap out, often years, before the other.

On the plus side, Hurrah on having the money for this purchase!
