Before I create an LJ cut, I'll say three non-spoilery things. I loved it. Mike Newell showed the Britain I know and love with all its greyness and rain and fog. I found myself actively homesick. It was a shock.

The second is that I'm so happy John Williams didn't do the music. Patrick Doyle's (Henry V, Indochine, Sense and Sensibility) score was subtle and very beautiful. He used Williams' "Hedwig's Theme" over the opening credits, but the difference in scoring made it sound fresh and romantic. I found myself listening in ways that I hadn't before.

Daniel Radcliffe is coming into his own as an actor.

There's so much I want to say. They had to cut out alot, but it made the choices in what they kept stand out in high relief.

Cedric Diggory was well played. You could believe him both as the golden boy everyone wanted to root for and as the person who would tell his friends not to wear the Anti-Potter badges.

Some of the aesthetic choices were interesting in the film. The four kids who were being held by the grindylows looked dead. I was frightened that they were, even though I've read the book and knew what was going on.

I missed the two scenes dealing with the financial side of the Tri-Wizard Tournament. I felt that we needed to see Mr. Diggory and Harry interact. I think not showing him backing the twins or telling them to use some to buy Ron some new dress robes was a mistake, though I can't put my finger on why.

Random movie thoughts:
The walls at Hogwarts seem to be getting higher and the towers narrower and taller as well.
While I don't think Gambon can really touch what Richard Harris was doing as Dumbledore, he convinced me that he is/could be the most powerful wizard on the side of good.
It would have been nice to see Mrs. Weasley.
The conversation in the fire with Sirius was not at all how I imagined it when I read the book, but I love how they did it. Really cool.
I felt a bit pervy about Harry in the bath, but the scene was funny and Myrtle had exactly the right tone.
I want the prefect's bathroom.
I wished we'd had time to meet Bill and Charlie Weasley.

There are so many more things I want to say. Images from the graveyard scenes at the end keep popping into my brain. The dance and Neville's pride in his dancing were stunningly good.

Other thoughts:
This is really my first time seeing a Potter film with kids. Before I'd always gone to late showings on the first night, but this was an 8:15 group (the line for the 8:50 show was 90% adults. Is 8:30 the cut off between a kids showing an adult one?). They were noisy through the previews, but, after the cheers for the movie title and Radcliffe's, Watson's, and Grint's names, they were stone quiet. The only voices I heard talking were adult ones. Stupid adults.

If anyone knows where I can get some good wallpapers or lj icons from the movie, let me know.
