A Belgian Abbey has found some of its original recipes. They're not exactly making it the old way, but they're presenting a modernized version.

0) ...TWELFTH CENTURY OMG.

1) How is this then a "220-year-old recipe"?

2) Is the thing published online anywhere yet? Or are they keeping it as a trade secret?

3) “We had the books with the old recipes, but nobody could read them,” Stautemas said. “It was all in old Latin and old Dutch." They... they have monks who can't read old Latin?

3a) Why? Do you have something better to be doing with your time, when you're a monk, than learning to read Latin?

3b) Of course, the entire goddamn SCA is standing by to handle any medieval beer-related translation emergencies. I'm pretty sure if anybody is at elevated risk of having a medieval beer-related translation emergency, the SCA will provide them a pager or something.

4) Only some elements from the recipe books are being used by the monks. “I don’t think people now would like the taste of the beer made back then,” Stautemas said. OH YE OF LITTLE FAITH. Is Belgium so blesséd a land that they don't know of "IPA", proof that people will drink anything and that the Devil walks among us?

5) Marc-Antoine Sochon, the newly appointed master brewer for the abbey, said: “In those times, regular beer was a bit tasteless, it was like liquid bread.” Was that an accident, or did he knowingly just slag Guinness?

6) Asked whether he felt comfortable with the commercial tie-up with big brewers, Stautemas said the royalties from all the Grimbergen beers would allow the monks to live in the monastery, make pilgrimages and help “those who come knocking on our door and need help”. AND LEARN TO READ LATIN YOU INEBRIATED REPROBATES. I WOULD ASK WHAT KIND OF MONKS YOU ARE BUT I HAVE READ THE CARMINA BURANA.
