Does anyone have any ideas for getting a cheap laptop? Used is fine. Must be able to connect to DSL service in CA. I need to have my own access. Since I don't know if I'm going permanently (If I am this becomes moot. I can take my desktop with me.), this may be my best solution.

All suggestions welcome.

Overstock.com sells cheap refurbished machines; they seem to have the cheapest ones out there, with laptops less than $500 (but which might not be able to handle DSL, I don't know). Talk to someone who knows PeeCees for info about what to shop for.

Also, http://www.dellauction.com/ looks promising, but I don't know how fast that will turn around. You don't want to get stuck weeks waiting for the package.

I believe Dell also has refurbished machines. As low as $805.

Computer repair shops/centers often have refurbished laptops.

If you know anyone who does computer repair work, you may be able to score one.

Any laptop will be able to connect to DSL service. It depends on what you need to do with it. Windows 98/OS9 and above will work. You can probably find one of those laptops for under $500.

I paid less than $800 for Will's iBook, from which I am typing to you now. I'll email you the link to the place I bought it.
