Twice tonight I've ended up on pages where I get a pop-up saying I need to update Java. There's no option to cancel. Closing it automatically loads a setup.exe (which I delete immediately without opening) and then the page goes to a warning page from my firewall to prevent my going to the website it's trying to redirect me to.

Does anyone know what's going on? Tell me I don't have to update Java.

Thanks, gang.

Many browsers have the option to simply turn Java off. That might be a good idea if you haven't, and don't have any Java web applications you use (Java is pretty rare these days.)

ETA: Which may be besides the point: sounds like a random trojan to me. It might be the websites you've visited that are infected, or your machine might have a browser virus.

*sigh* That's what I was afraid of. I did a full scan last night and nothing showed up. Should I downloaded spybot or adaware?

No idea. This is a Windows thing I wouldn't understand. I would start googling things like "java update popups" and "java update popups virus", whiiiiich... Oh look! Remove UpdatesJava.com pop-up virus (Fake Java Update)
