Professional Choices
Jun. 19th, 2002 09:37 pmMy problem is that I was born too late to be a courtesan. Seriously. I have a wide range of knowledge and can converse on many subjects. I know how to behave in different atmospheres crossing class and culture lines. I know what GiGi's aunt is listening for when she rolls the cigar against her ear, and what season is best to serve white truffles (late autumn).
What I can't do is keep house. I can cook. I can cook a kosher for pesach (Ashkenazi tradition) meal for over a hundred when required. But my living room is a disaster area and I will only be able to find my bedroom floor with the help of a snow shovel.
(By the way, I'm hoping to paint my room soon. Does anyone know what they're calling the shade that used to be called Duck Egg Blue? It's sort of the shade that Canaletto used for Venetian skies, if that helps.)
Courtesans have maids. And masseurs. Reasons to lie about all day in rooms with great art surrounding them. Reasons to take all the wonderful fabric I have lying around and drape it or sew it or something.
And I'd get laid.
