Can anyone give me a recommendation about a clear book or website on how to do self-massage?

Also, does anyone know where I can information on colonoscopy without anaesthetic or with conscious sedation? I am terrified of being put under. Those of you who know my appendectomy story know that I fight and flail when I'm under. The doctor keeps trying to insist on full anaesthesia, but it's an outpatient procedure. I have a hugely high pain threshold.

I am surprised that your doctor insists on having you knocked out for the colonoscopy. The automatic thing where I had them done was an IV with meds to keep me from feeling anything and enough sedation to make me very spaced out. The first time, I watched on-screen as she was doing it. The second time I fell asleep, either because they gave me too much stuff or because I was exhausted from being in the bathroom all night prior to my morning procedure.
This is an interesting article

I'd be fine with that, but he's worried about "discomfort" -- I'm terrified of never waking up.

Get another doctor. I've never heard of general anaesthesia for a colonoscopy. General anaesthesia is dangerous, and there's no reason to do it when sedation is adequate. I understand the standard of care to be IV sedation; everyone I've ever known to have one had IV sedation.

I wasn't put under full anesthesia for either of mine. I think I was given a combo of versed (for relaxation) and some kind of pain medication or something. I was knocked out, but it was more like heavy sleeping pills or something.

when my mother had one she didn't have general anesthesia either, she was sedated. although I'm not sure of wikipedia's medical accuracy this paragraph made sense :
"Some doctors prefer to work with totally anesthetized patients inasmuch as the lack of any perceived pain or discomfort allows for a leisurely examination. Twilight sedation is, however, inherently safer than general anesthesia; it also allows the patients to follow simple commands and even to watch the procedure on a closed-circuit monitor. For these reasons it is generally best to request twilight sedation and ask the doctor to take his or her time despite any discomfort which the procedure may entail. "
