My Week

Monday night was good. The PUD passed.

Tuesday *sigh* So, I have a new boss. He's pretty good. Among other things, he listens to people and tries to get them doing jobs that a) they'll like, b) they have skills for, and c) they can grow into.

Our biggest downfall has been performance. My prior boss ruled by fiat, had a whim of iron, and played favorites. (Those were her good points. *sigh*) As an agency, we may be sanctioned by DOL for not just failing to meet our goals, but for doing so for too many years running.

Boss has decided to form a performance monitoring team -- something that I proposed within about six weeks of starting work here two years ago -- that will be based in his office at headquarters.

He can't hire an expert from outside. He made up his mind, talked to the person he wanted to head the team, and sent out an email announcing her appointment.

I'm the other half of this team. (She's policy. I'm implementation.)

In the times we have worked together in the past, she has belittled me, dressed me down (undeservedly, in my opinion) in public, called me demeaning nicknames (Missypoo being a particular "favorite" of mine), and taken credit for work I've done. (To be fair about the last one, she's also taken flak from unreasonable boss for work I did that didn't meet the new requirements the boss had that she hadn't shared with anyone before the deadline.)

I could smile and take it because, believe it or not, I like her otherwise, and the assignments were short term -- usually a day or two, none lasted more than a week.

Problem two with new boss is that he shares his calendar in outlook with a half dozen people, including me, which means that if someone needs to make a private appointment that can't be gossiped about, it's impossible. So. I waited late to try to seem him. Didn't work on Tuesday -- partially thanks to the earthquake -- and didn't work on Wednesday.

On Thursday, I was considering setting an ankle noose trap outside his office door, when I was finally able to make it clear that I needed to speak with him sooner rather than later.

He was shocked when I asked to be moved to one of our centers rather than stay at headquarters. He was even more shocked when I explained that the request to move to a center was a compromise that a center supervisor had come up with. My plan had been to give my two weeks notice -- in spite of having no job to go to -- because having to work for her would be that bad.

It has been left with a) over the next week he and I will define the duties of both parts of the performance team, b) before she moves to headquarters it will be made clear to her that I am not her secretary and she will be responsible for her own work, and c)for the first month after the new team is formed I will meet with him weekly, separately, to review the status of the team.

I also explained that the supervisor of the center downstairs was doing a bad job and gave a couple of examples, including the fact that she panicked during the earthquake. Her desk is in the back of the center, but she beat most of the customers out of the front door.

The two best parts of Friday, besides being told that the event I was supposed to work today was cancelled, were going out with a friend (we had Pomegranate Hurricanes and Calamari at Cantina Marina) and having someone stop me and say that I was the only one who knew what to do during the earthquake and people should have listened to me.

I got out and bought water, peanut butter, shelf-life soy milk, cereal, kipper snacks, bread, and applesauce as my emergency supplies before the rain came this morning. I have my hand cranked radio with emergency light and my standing flashlight with fresh batteries. I'm prepared for Irene.

Glad you got through the earthquake okay...and I hope that the job thing sorts itself out in your favor. I'm also glad that your new boss listened to you and is trying to make sure that things go a little more smoothly between you and your 'new' teammate.

I'm praying for everyone out East that they make it through Irene!

We're still being told not to go out unless we absolutely have to because the winds are erratic, but the worst passed us sometime after 1 a.m.

Thank you or your good wishes.
