I read Pratchett's I Shall Wear Midnight, the latest Tiffany Aching book, this week. It was nice to see old friends. I remember the first Pratchett I read was Equal Rites when it first came out in US paperback. It was years before I knew anyone else who read his stuff, but by the time the next one arrive (Mort? Sourcery), I'd read the first two books and Good Omens.

For some reason, I missed that a sequel to Cyteen had come out, so I'm currently reading C.J. Cherryh's Regenesis.

I saw Easy A today, and found it witty, charming, and an excellent treatise on the dynamics of "slut shaming." I want everyone to see it so I can get all the cool reactions from my friends because I think it will provoke conversations. Plus, Emma Stone is HOT.

My pre-order is in at Amazon, and I'm staring at my calendar waiting for Sept. 28 to come. Once I got to Tiffany in my reading plan, I was a bit wary. But getting about 5 pages into Wee Free Men won me over.

I have been very very tempted to go see Easy A, and not just because Emma Stone a) is part of the namefellowship and b) totally rocked the house in Zombieland. Except that one thing New Place does not have is transit-accessible movie theaters. May have to go into the city or back home to see it (and The Town.)

Oooh, I knew there was a new Tiffany Aching book, but didn't realize it was already out. I just put a reserve on it at the library, and we'll see how long it takes till I get it.

Have not heard of Easy A, but then, I tend to be dreadfully behind on movies. Shall look for some reviews.

I did belatedly see the Girl w the Dragon Tattoo, which I enjoyed, but which I think might be far too graphic in places for you (I do not think the hollywood remake will be an improvement. I strongly suspect they will seriously soften up the actually real and pertinent violence, and instead gives us toned down sexy hollywood violence. I'd really rather have the violence be something that makes you cringe, and not be glossed over and presented as something sort of exciting that doesn't really happen to real people. You could actually take a lot of the violence that happens to the main character out w/out changing the plot, but aside from telling you a lot about the character, I think it's there very specifically to make you realize what was done to the victims in the possible murder they are trying to solve. You wouldn't need that reminder, I know.)

More optimistically, MIT is running An Education in a couple of weeks, which I wanted to see but thought I had completely missed.

The new Pratchett seems to be out a couple of weeks later in the US, but no harm in putting it on reserve early. I'll be interested in your take on An Education.

Easy A is very light in some ways -- and quite funny -- but there are some really interesting social commentaries. I was surprised to find out it was PG-13, I thought it might be R.

I remember Equal Rites, I actually posed for the cover (as both the witch and the little girl) when my husband did the cover for the SF Book club edition of it. I also posed for Sourcery and Wyrd Sisters. The books are a lot of fun. He's done a few other Terry Pratchett covers and always enjoys them.
