According to The Guardian, Pakistan is having a problem with antibiotic resistant TYPHOID!
I have at various points in my life needed typhoid shots for travel. They leave a mark (for a few days) that's a pink to red ring about an inch in circumference from the injection site. The ring is filled with light bruising, and, if you hold your other hand about three inches away from it, you can feel the heat of an intense fever. You also wish your arm would spontaneously fall off because the muscle aches are so bad.
Per WebMD, there's A 70% recovery rate -- with antibiotics. Even so, 5% of people who get it are carriers for up to a year after recovery; a smaller percentage are carriers for life -- see the infamous Typhoid Mary (Mallon).
It's relatively preventable with good hand washing and thorough cooking. But if you ever wonder why it's recommended not to eat raw vegetables and to eat only peel fruits raw when traveling it's to prevent this. It's carried by a form of the salmonella bacteria.
I know it's highly unlikely that we'll get this here, but the agony of the people who have it and the ease of spread, since it can take up to 30 days after infection to fall ill, is horrible.
