Some 20-odd years ago, the Georgia flag had the old Virginia battle flag as the entire right side. The flag was changed, but many Georgians didn't like it. A referendum was held and the current flag was chosen. (I'm typing one-fingered on my tablet, but I'll add links later.)

What they voted for was the Confederate flag with a seal of Georgia superimposed on the blue square in the upper left. See, most non-southerners look at the Virginia battle flag -- red ground, crossed blue stripes with stars in them -- and say, "look, the Confederate flag.". The actual flag, known colloquially as "the stars and bars" has two wide red stripes flanking a wide white stripe, a large blue patch in the upper left with 13 white stars. Look both up on Wikipedia and be thoroughly nauseated.

I was sitting on a lovely sun porch off my room, staring at the flag poles and realizing how much I loathe the state flag.
