It's my first time in Turkey. We toured the archeological site of Ephesus which is both beautiful and impressive. However, the Romans, bless their little cotton socks, laid out a road through the city of smooth marble.
The day was dry, or I would have been on my butt multiple times. Sis helped a great deal, and so did the site photographer. I learned early on to turn my cane around when going down hill. I looked for rough stones to help my footing and broken ones to secure my cane tip. It was still difficult. The distance was probably half to three quarters of a mile, but it felt twice as long because I had to measure every step.
The most expensive tour we booked was a classical concert at the ruins. I looked at the slick marble stairs and went, "no." We cancelled too late for a refund. I'm hoping that they'll give me something back because they didn't mention smooth marble steps in their warnings for the disabled. The distance, even the steps, are fine. Marble that even the able-bodied fell on is not.
I can hear the muezzin calling the faithful to prayer.
Query for biblical scholars: how did the evangelists get their symbols? I know the man, lion, bull, and eagle faces come from Isaiah. I think they're repeated in Revelation, but how did Matthew (man), Mark (lion), John (eagle), and Luke (bull) get their assignments? I ask because our tour guide mentioned that Luke had visited Ephesus, and I saw bull capitals frequently. But John, supposedly, was here, too, and he got the eagle. Anyone have a clue?
ETA: Someone on another of the ship's tours, fell so hard on the marble pathway that he had to be rushed back to the ship's doctor -- after they found him a wheelchair.
