I'm substitute teaching one or two days a week. That's the plan, anyway. We are supposed to be able to pick our assignments from the ones on offer -- first come, first pick -- and I thought I could handle 6th Grade Science.
I was called to the office before the school day began and told that I'd be teaching 3rd Grade. I hated 3rd grade. I didn't understand 3rd graders when I was one. I was behind in math. My language arts teacher realized that I was way ahead, so she gave me the fourth grade book. I completed it in a week and she handed me the 5th grade reading book with the admonishment to read only one assignment per class day. If I finished it, I could read on my own.
My voice hurts because I yelled so often for them to be quiet. There was no other way to get their attentions. I will NEVER work at that school again. If the principal can't respect my choice of assignment, and the kids don't respect anyone, then what use am I?
