Beautiful Music
Jun. 19th, 2023 12:46 pmI know many people in my circle are into Early Music. This isn't early at all.
Around Memorial Day, Sirius XM classical did the 76 most popular symphonies. Since in the past Beethoven kept winning, he was excluded from the vote this year. Anyway, I was listening because I had more than the usual amount of driving to do and I just wasn't in the mood for jazz.

The link is to a piece called Mysterious Mountain, which is Alan Hohvaness second symphony. Since the only list I can find online was from 2021, I'm not certain of the number it came in the countdown on Symphony Hall, but it was within the Top 30 which surprised and gratified the DJ. It's beautiful. At only about 18 minutes, it's short for a symphony (or maybe I listen to too much Mahler), but it's as plangent and moving a piece of music as I've heard.
