I give to charity. Not as much as I'd like to give, not as often as I want to give, but as often as I can for small amounts I can afford.

My only recurring monthly donation is to Donors Choose (dot org). I try to distribute the gift to local schools -- DC, if not actually in my neighborhood -- but most of the money goes to one of the three public schools (two elementary, one middle school) within walking distance of my flat.

It's payday today, and Donors Choose contacted me about a .5 matching fund from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (if I give $10, the project receives $15) that included a project at my local middle school. The request includes pencils for the students plus an electric sharpener, two giant post-it packs, and an array of dry erase markers. Other than the pencils, which the parents supplied, these things used to be provided by the school districts. In affluent areas of town, the PTA will make up short-falls up to and including giving each "graduating" fifth grader zir own electronic tablet.

The extra funding donation is only for today 13 August 2019, but for once, I'm asking. If you have a dollar or two for a charitable donation -- and I completely understand if you don't -- please consider contributing to either the project I'm linking below or to a similar project in your own school district.
