I love my city
May. 23rd, 2011 09:25 amThe weather has gotten hot and muggy, but, after all the rain, that's to be expected.
I got some produce at Eastern Market yesterday and walked home through the Capitol grounds. The roses have had their first bloom, the magnolias are coming out, the honeysuckle is running riot, and the huge acacia tree at the Capitol that blooms at least a week before all the others in this city was already blooming. The city smells sensual and exotic.
When I got to the base of the hill I heard rushing water. I thought it was an acoustic effect from the fountain on the fourth floor-ish terrace of one of the House office buildings, but I turned my head to look anyway.
THE BARTHOLDI FOUNTAIN IS BACK!
It's been gone for at least 18 months while being repaired. It's still behind a temporary wall, but the lights and the nymphs can be seen over the wall, and there are windows in some of it so the progress can be viewed. It looks like the basin and the statue are both full repaired -- at least to these layman's eyes -- and they just need to finish the landscaping and paving around it.
I'm so thrilled and doing a huge happy dance.
