I'm trying to get my thoughts together on race and class in DC and another post on why I didn't get to meet Alton Brown last weekend.
But for right now, I just have to mention that I was walking to the grocery store this afternoon. It's the first real spring day and people were out in their yards visiting with kids playing on the sidewalk.
A girl ran by me and her little sister was trying to catch her. When she came parallel to me, she kept pace and just stared at me until I looked back at her.
Little girl: You white.
Me: Yup.
She continued looking at me until she met up with her sister and their friends.
Still it's better than some of the reactions the kids have had. A couple have been scared of me. Most think I'm their teacher which leads me to the conclusion that all middle aged white women look alike.
