On a lighter note (sort of)
Mar. 6th, 2009 12:20 amVery few of the kids I mentor are interested in coming on the National Gallery field trip.
I expected to lose about half of the thirty kids in the group that had been invited, but only eight are coming. There was one who really wanted to come, but the tests offered by a gifted and talented program are being given only at that day and time.
What bothers me is that one of the kids who was part of the invited group said, "I don't like art. I only like music."
Her reasoning turned out to be that she didn't like art galleries so she'd never been to one because she knew she'd hate it. (Just for the record, I'm cool with the idea that someone doesn't like art galleries as long as they've actually been to one.)
I hope the scholars who do come enjoy it. The plan was always to break into small groups and let the kids find the art they liked. Since we may have a mentor per kid, that should be easy.
