Me Stuff

My New Year's resolution was to take better care of myself. There were several things that made me decide that was the right resolution, including at least one bad tachycardic episode, and it's been working well so far.

It actually started in late November when I asked Mom if we could have more fish and vegetable dishes instead of meat. The tachycardia had scared me enough to ask, and we've been doing pretty well. The thing is when Sis and I were kids, we weren't rich. Many of the first recipes I learned were for vegetarian dishes because vegetables were cheap.

One of the reasons this came up as a personal subject was something [livejournal.com profile] siderea once said to me. People were unwilling either to ask me to help with something or to accept my volunteering because, as she put it, I couldn't be trusted not to run myself into the ground doing it. Essentially, I have very few boundaries. Since I can't be trusted to say no, I guess it's kind of hard for people to say yes to me.

So I'm working on it.

I'm attending at least one yoga class a week -- and loving it. I can even do a supported handstand. *VBG* It's helping me learn to trust my body, and it's really increased my awareness of my own limitations.

The supported handstand is an example. I can do it. After several weeks of work, I can hold the position for five or six deep breaths, and I can do it a couple of times within the time frame the teacher allots us. What I'm working toward is holding the position for the full time, but the steps are slow and small. The first week I could only get one leg up the wall once.

I've learned to request me time. One weekend a month, the rest of the family does whatever it wants to without me. If I miss a movie, that's my look out. Mom whines about it, but both Sis and Dad have been really supportive of it. And Sis and I have taken some sister time too.

Lastly, I've given up sugar for Lent. I may not be a believer any more, but Lent is a good way to measure time and feels like a spring cleaning. Dad's already thanked me because it makes it easier for him to go back to a diabetic diet if someone is willing to do it with him.
