I got it from jerminating, who got it from wook, who stole it. My responses:

What's on your bedside table?

My "toys" drawer is in there, and there's also a Magic 8 Ball and an alarm clock on top. Other than that, lots of books. Many are erotica, but most are not.

What's the geekiest part of your music collection?

Either an obscure British band called Harvey and the Wallbangers who represent a good part of my very well mis-spent youth, or my cool Jazz from the 50s. I adore Chet Baker on trumpet, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson. Modern Jazz Quartet are gods.

What do you eat when you raid the fridge at night?

Milk (it's the osteoporosis) or sweets (which are bad for me).

What is your secret guaranteed weeping movie?

The only movie I've ever cried at was "Glory." I'm an Army brat, and that kind of courage always gets me on some level. The only opera was "Porgy and Bess" when Serena (Wilma Shakesnider) sang "My Man's Gone Now" with all the keening, my sixteen year old self had its first diluted taste of mourning. The sole play: "Cyrano de Bergerac" with Derek Jacobi. It wasn't the last act that did me in, though; it was the end of Act 4 when Cyrano rushes into battle to die because Christian is gone and he cannot speak his love to Roxanne.

If you could have plastic surgery, what would you have done?

There are so many temptations, but honestly, the women that I find beautiful in old age are the ones who haven't "had work done." I'm having many age issues at the moment, and I think the transition from slim and nearly beautiful to fat and close to ugly has been hard. I don't know whether my urge to stake my claim to my past will win out over my desire to accept my future. If it does, then the double chin goes and the eyes get smoothed out (as long as I don't end up looking the way so many women do when they have it done: extruded).

Do you have a completely irrational fear?

Snakes. Sometimes heights (or maybe it's falling. I've never been completely clear). Vermin.

What is the little physical habit that gives away your insecure moments?

I don't know.

Do you ever have to beg?

I make others beg. Well, not really. I hate the feeling of begging. Since I know it, I must have done it.

Do you have too many love interests?

Nowhere near enough. Anyone know someone who might be interested in Fair, Fat, and Forty?

Do you know anyone famous?

I've met a few, but can't say that I know any famous people well.

Describe your bed:

It's wooden with newel posts. It belonged to a beloved and aged relative. It will one day be a guest bed, and I'll have my dream bed of four posters with hangings for privacy and all sorts of hidden devices.

Spontaneous or plan?

Loose plans. I hate being absolutely tied to a schedule, but I also hate not having any idea of shape to the day. This is especially true when traveling.

Who should play you in a movie about your life?

I can't think of anyone who'd capture my flair from my younger days, and I'm too amorphous now.

Do you know how to play poker?

I know the basic hands for 5 card stud, but I use it to play a version of patience rather than to actually play poker.

What do you carry with you at all times?

Money, passport, Blistex.

How do you drive?

When I have a license, I tend to be very fast. I love stick shifts and hate power steering.

What do you miss most about being little?

If you mean slim, I miss feeling like I'm healthy enough to do anything. If you mean childhood, not one damn thing. I was very bad at being a real child. And little adults tend to be tortured.

Are you happy with your given name?

I love it.

How much money would it take to get you to give up the Internet for a year?

$3000.00 a month for life. The internet only takes over my life when I have no salary and no way to afford plays and books and operas and travel and restaurants and...

What color is your bedroom?

A hideous marigold. I'm hoping to paint it duck egg blue before then end of summer.

What was the last song you were listening to?

Chet Baker playing "Goodbye" from the Songs for Lovers cd.

Have you ever been in a school play?

Yes, many.

Who are your best friends?

Lauren. Jill. My house-mates.

Have you ever been in love?

Twice. I hope to be that lucky again. But I'm worried that I'm too old to risk myself and too unattractive for anyone else to want to take a risk with me.

Do you like yourself and believe in yourself?

The first sometimes. The second? Not recently. Not for a couple of years.

Have you ever done any illegal drugs?

No, dammit. I was always too sensible. Cocaine would have killed me (a heart condition that wasn't diagnosed 'til my 30s), so it's probably just as well. But I'd have liked to have taken the risk and been a devil at least once. Still, it can never be guaranteed that it will be once. People take drugs because the drugs make them feel good.

Do you think your cute?

I have been. I can still clean-up acceptably.

Do you consider yourself to be a nice person?

I try to be. Because I know that, if I let myself, my capacity for unkindness would be boundless.

Do you spend more time with your girlfriend, boyfriend, or your friends?

When I have a lover, I tend to make him/her my center for at least a little while. But friends are always the constant, and, once the romantic relationship finds its balance, I try to make certain that friends are still there.
