fabrisseI just had an interview for a post in India. It would be based in Cochin.
I asked whether it would be possible to make it a term contract (six months was the period we seemed to settle around, but it could be as little as three or as long as a year) rather than a permanent position. They are looking into it, and HR will contact me next week about those questions. They are also looking into the possibility of my staying at a boarding house where meals would be provided.
On the one hand, I do not want to look a gift horse in the mouth. The opportunity to live overseas again is a great one. I've never been to India. It would let me see and experience a new culture -- or should I say myriad new cultures.
But I would be lying if I didn't admit the violence in Mumbai worried me. I have lived in places where terrorism was a daily concern, but the IRA or whomever were never after me. I could always be collateral damage, but I wasn't a direct target. The Mumbai incident was targetted at American and British citizens. That feels more personal and therefore more worrisome.
On the one hand, a steady income for a fixed length of time with a return plane ticket sounds marvelous. On the other hand, what would I come back to? If the economy gets worse, will there be room for someone returning from a foreign country?
