New Options on LJ

My fandom life is separate from my other lives (work, family). I will take it amiss if anything I write here shows up on Facebook because I'm listed under my real name on Facebook. I'd prefer not to have Twitter references either.

Why don't the companies -- I'm actually thinking about Facebook mostly -- understand that most of us have a whole series of social networks in real life and that we might want to have ways to separate them in our cyberlife?!?

Probably because they are too busy trying to take over our entire lives. Basically, the plan is for your life to become a 'living' version of the Sims . *sigh*

And there's no way I can find to get those little checkboxes OUT of my journal.

*fumes*

I think your assessment is correct.

Same here. I use a different email address for Facebook as well. For me, LJ is like Fight Club and we don't talk about it elsewhere.

This is terrible. I hated it when comments at the LATimes had to be done through Twitter or Facebook -- at least my Twitter is Fabrisse, not my real name, but this is unconscionable.

Because they care more about money than customers. Crossposting gets hits and raises revenues, it has nothing to do with what we want. I keep my LJ and the rest of my personal stuff separate, and as careful as I am, at some point I know there will be a screw up. Grrrrr.

Yeah. That's the big problem.

Yes. This. I actually barely never use Facebook, but it's my real name and relates to my "real" life. Although I use LJ far more frequently, I really don't want ANY overlap between the two. Now, I use separate names and separate emails and the such, but still... it would not behoove me, professionally, to have it know that I write (and read) gay smut of copyrighted characters and I really don't want that to accidently become known.

And yeah, the companies don't care because they only see us as revenue streams (I'm looking at you, Facebook and LJ). Privacy concerns or our own preferences are not only secondary, they are something that is essentially irrelevant when compared to company profits.

'Grrrr' pretty much sums it up.

I do blame LJ somewhat less than I do FaceTwitter. They're the ones pushing this on the public and I think LJ responded. BUT... LJ should have provided a full opt-out for those of us who want one.

True, but LJ has a history of making HUGE mistakes when it comes to their user base (especially as it relates to fandoms -- if you're really interested I can try and find some links later tonight when I'm not at work and avoiding the same.) Yeah, but FaceTwitter really is pushing this upon the public.
