In Defense of Alchemy [sci/chem, hist]

YES YES YES.

SciShow did a collab with Tom Lum and ESOTERICA and delivered a deep dive into the history of the relationship of chemistry and alchemy and the politicization of the distinction between the two: "In Defense of Alchemy" (2025 Oct 17).

I cannot tell you how much I loved this and what a happy surprise this was. It ties into a whole bunch of other things I passionately want to tell you about that have to do with epistemology, science, and politics (and early music) but I didn't expect to be able to tie chemistry/alchemy in to it because I had neither the chops nor the time to do so. But now, some one else has done this valuable work and tied it all up with a bow for me. I'm thrilled.

Update, Or: J? Where the hell is the j? [me, heath]

I have been dealing with some health stuff. I recently got a somewhat heavy medical diagnosis. It's nothing life-threatening, and of yet I have only had the mildest of symptoms, and seem to be responding well to treatment, but it's a bummer. My new specialist seems to be fantastic, so that's good.

Meanwhile, I have also finally started having a medical problem I've been anticipating ever since my back went wonky three years ago: my wrists have finally started crapping out. Because I cannot tolerate sitting for long, I have been using my laptop on a rig that holds it over me on my bed. But this means I haven't been using my ergonomic keyboard because it's not compatible with this rig. I'm honestly surprised it's taken this long for my wrists to burst into flames again, but HTML and other coding has always been harder on my arms than simple text, and the research and writing I've been doing on Latin American geopolitics has been a lot of that. And while I can use dictation for text*, it's useless for HTML or anything that involves a lot of cut-and-paste. Consequently, I've gotten really behind on all my writing, both here and my clinical notes.

So I ordered a NocFree split wireless keyboard in hopes that it will be gentler on my arms. It arrived last night, and I have been relearning how to touch type, only with my arms at my side and absolutely not being able to see the keyboard.

You would not believe how long it took me to type this, but it's all slowly coming back. Also, I feel the need to share: I'm doing this in emacs. Which feels like a bit of a high wire act, because errors involving meta keys could, I dunno, reformat my hard drive or crash the electrical grid.

Here's hoping I get the hang of this before I break the backspace key from overuse or accidentally launch a preemptive nuclear strike on Russia.

* If, you know, I don't too dearly value my sanity.

Plumbing Issues -- (Leadwort Day, 18th of Fog, Year 234)

I reported through the apartment complex's online service request page that there was water dripping from my bathroom ceiling fan on Sunday 02 Nov 2025, and got no response.

Yesterday (Friday, 07 NOV 2025), I emailed the PM and got the maintenance staff (3 guys names Noel, Vladimir, and Martin (the supervisor) who confirmed that there was leakage and went upstairs to figure out what was causing it.

Apparently my upstairs neighbor's bathtub leaks.

There are plumbers here now, and they're going to have to take my bathroom ceiling apart.

FIC: Royal chapel (Tempestuous Tours)

Not to be confused with the royal sanctuary, the current royal chapel is a small room off the reception chamber. Visitors are more than welcome to enter here while awaiting the Jackal or his High Lord, but they are asked to maintain a reverent atmosphere.

Quite deliberately, the royal chapel is not dedicated to any one god or goddess. Instead, it is intended as a place where visitors may revere whoever or whatever they hold highest.

To aid in this reverence, the small chapel - barely big enough for four people to stand in - is crammed with sacred objects from around the world.

Directly above the tiny altar are the masks of the Seven Gods and Goddesses of Koretia. These are used as an aid to prayer by Koretians, who touch the masks during their worship. Visitors are asked not to touch the masks unless they wish to pray to the Koretian gods and goddesses. In particular, one of the masks belongs to the Jackal himself. Parents may wish to distract their children at this point, for some young children find the Jackal's mask especially frightening.

A nearby fipple flute is a gift of the lately deceased Royal Bard of Daxis. Although the harps played by bards are Daxis's most sacred instrument, ordinary Koretians play simpler instruments to their goddess the Song Spirit, such as the fipple flute.

At the other end of the chapel, sitting on a table, is an open copy of The International Law, whose roots lie in the Chara's law. The purpose of the International Law is to keep harmony between the Three Lands. The book was given as a present by the late Chara of Emor; this particular volume is specially scribed, with many beautiful illustrations of scenery in the Three Lands.

A tapestry hanging on the wall is a recent donation from the Duke of the Hunting Federation on the eastern mainland. It shows the blood-lineage of the Duke, all the way back to the earliest years of the eastern mainland. As I need not tell any visitor from the eastern mainland, eastern mainlanders regard blood-lineages as even more hallowed than Koretians and Daxions do. This deeply sacred object is intended as a gift of friendship between the Hunting Federation and the Three Lands.

Finally, on a small ledge you will find a tiny set of northern animal sculptures, carved by Arpeshian artists. The carvings are intended to represent the faiths of the people of Emor's Dominion of Arpesh, as well as the the people of the northern mainland nations. Like northern mainlanders, Arpeshians venerate animals, but unlike the northern mainlanders, Arpeshians direct their veneration toward works of art such as this.

Visitors who have studied the political divisions of the Great Peninsula often ask why the chapel contains no objects from Emor's Dominion of Marcadia. The absence is deliberate. Until very recently, Marcadians were forbidden by Emorian law from worshipping their own gods. Although that prohibition has been lifted in the most recent Emorian edition of the Chara's laws, it is likely to be many years before the Marcadians are able to re-establish contact with their gods. Until that time, their wretched state of spiritual emptiness is represented by the lack of Marcadian sacred objects in this chapel.

SNAP [curr ev, US]

Americans, as I hope you know, on Nov 1st, the Federal government, being shut down, did not transmit the money to the states to pay for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, aka SNAP, aka "Food Stamps". In many states, SNAP money is supposed to hit recipients' EBT cards on the first of the month. It didn't. There is in the SNAP budget funds to cover emergencies, but Trump said he would not release it; lawsuits ensued, and as of right now, partial payments are going to be or have been made.

I commend the following video to you. It's longish - 26 minutes – but worth your time.

Hank Green, of vlogbrothers fame, invites Jeannie Hunter, Tennessee regional director of the Society of St. Andrew (aka EndHunger.org), on to his personal chanenel explain how the US's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, aka SNAP, aka "Food Stamps", actually works.

Hunter turns out to be a great interview subject and the resultant conversation was fascinating. I highly recommend it - not just to understand what's at stake in the goverment shutdown, but for your own simple enjoyment of learning how things actually work, and also so you can more eloquently advocate for this system.

I've been doing too much doomscrolling again, but I've also been reading a LOT of books. So I'm going to try to use my morning Happy Light Time to write up reviews of what I've been reading lately.

Days of Atonement, Walter Jon Williams: first published 1991, set in the early 2000s New Mexico. The protagonist, Loren Hawn, is the police chief of Atocha, NM, who prides himself on on never having shot one of his people. He just wants to make sure Atocha stays *nice*, you know? And if he gets really, *really* angry with people who don't support that, and uses his fists to show them the error of their ways, well, that's part of the old-school Western lawman tradition. As is his part in Atocha's tradition of civic bribery.

I gotta hand it to WJW, this is the very, VERY rare police procedural that's aware that ACAB, including the protagonist. The reason it works is, first, the antagonist is *worse*; second, there's no-one seriously trying to clean up the town. The *threat* of cleaning up the town is there, but it's an empty threat, no-one actually means it. If the old order of corruption is swept away, it will be replaced by a new, less local one.

I can see why the book didn't really "break through" as WJW hoped: the protagonist is *not* a Good Person you can root for whole-heartedly, he's not very nice and he doesn't understand himself very well, though he does grow and learn in the course of the novel. The ending isn't altogether happy and triumphant, either. It's a fascinating and complex book, I'm glad

james_davis_nicoll recently reviewed it, I missed it when it was new.

Fic In A Box has a very unusual set of assignment requirements: everyone is owed (and is asking for) 10k of fanfiction, which by default can be given as one 10k+ fic or several 1k+ fics. The other fanwork mediums are given word count equivalents, which you can view on the medium ruleset post.

The Biggles books span a hefty chunk of the 20th century, from World War I to the 1960s; which time period you prefer to write about is up to you. However, I have a soft spot for the WWI period, not just because of the authenticity of the flying scenes but also because of the all too believable shift in Biggles himself from a daring, gallant, and very young hero to a tired, burnt-out veteran. At the other end of his long and active career, he becomes leader of a team of special service police officers during the Cold War. I find the close friendship among the colleagues with whom he shares digs to be very appealing. Especially fascinating also is his evolving relationship with Erich von Stalhein as they "bury the hatchet" of their antagonism, ultimately becoming friends.
I've only requested Biggles and Algy because they're the ones who appear through the whole series. Feel free to include any other canonical characters appropriate to the period in which you set your story.

So my entire basis for nominating/requesting this is that we were reading the Iliad and talking about the manuscript history and my professor said something along the lines of "Aristarchus always goes with the opposite of whatever Zenodotus does, he always picks the opposite reading." And that made me desperately curious about what Aristarchus might have thought of Zenodotus himself (since he has such a tendency to disagree violently with him), and what Zenodotus might have thought of Aristarchus' reactions to his work.
I know they weren't alive at the same time so I'd be perfectly happy with Aristarchus just thinking/talking about Zenodotus, but if you want to either change the timeline so that they could possibly meet or introduce some kind of time travel into the mix I would also enjoy that! (But please don't do a full modern AU.)
Some more prompts/ideas:

- what drives their differing approaches to the text? (lectio facilior vs lectio difficilior, etc)
- a modern-day scholar, or a later librarian, going through their different edits and puzzling out something about what's going on with them

I would love a fic that explores any of the nominated characters’ feelings about how Kraftwerk has changed over time, perhaps looking back at the early years compared to the current year they’re in. It could take place from the late 70s to even today, since all four of the nominated characters are still alive except for Florian, even if two out of three left the band. You could even write a fic that involves Florian’s death if you want.
Alternatively, there is so much angst potential surrounding Ralf’s 1982 cycling accident. How do the other band members feel about the accident? What are their fears and worries while Ralf is in a coma? How do they feel after he comes back to consciousness? How does Ralf feel about it? You don’t need to answer all these questions if you don’t want.
These are just some ideas. Please don’t feel limited by them!
I have no strong feelings about shipping them or writing them gen. I do appreciate Ralf/Florian in particular, but it’s not essential by any means, and if you want to write Ralf and Florian as friends or ship something other than Ralf/Florian, I am totally here for it.

I’d love seeing Ivanov and Petrov huddling for warmth. I love that trope so much, and it just seems so obvious for the setting. Maybe they ran out of fuel and can’t heat their cabin anymore. Maybe that also means they can’t make their beloved Nescafé!
Even if you don’t want to write them huddling for warmth, overall, I’d just love something that involves how tough their living environment is. The whole survivalist element of polar exploration is something that I think might be interesting to write about. You could go in a dark, serious direction with that if you’d like, and I’d be all for it. But I am also very willing for there to be humor involved, especially around their undying appreciation of Nescafé.
Or you can write something totally different! These prompts are just ideas.
I have no strong feelings about shipping the Polars or writing them as just friends. Do whatever feels right for the story!

There is so much potential to draw on for Jack and Fred’s postwar life. It might be worth exploring Jack’s increasing paranoia around being found out later in his life, which is only mentioned in a single paragraph in the book. Or you could take it in a more lighthearted route: domestic fluff together as they establish their new life in San Jose, perhaps with a little angst undercurrent as they are still having to be discreet about their relationship. These are just two ideas for their life together after the war.
Alternatively, I’d love gen Jack & Eleanor. I think it would be especially interesting to see Eleanor realizing that the reason why Jack didn’t go after her like Duane did is that he’s gay. Perhaps it dawns on her on her own. Or, perhaps Jack finally comes out to her at some point, since she is his friend, after all. Or maybe even both of that in the same fic! But even if you don’t go that exact route, I would love to read a fic that further explores Jack and Eleanor’s friendship.
These are just two things I’m thinking about, but don’t feel like you have to follow them!

Something I immediately noticed upon beginning to watch this show is how the dynamic between these two is not typical for roommates or even friends. I have lived with roommates before, and I have never experienced a situation where one always cooks for the other. That part in particular always struck me as unusual for two men living together who are not in a relationship, but it's not the only thing of that sort between these two. Their dynamic is especially odd (ha!) for male friends in the 70s, but even today I think it would be unusual.
I’d love to see further exploration of this unusually couple-like situation for a roommate/friend relationship. If it occurs to either of them that it’s unusual, how do they feel about it? Are there homophobic thoughts around it, or perhaps attempts to relate it to a heteronormative idea of a relationship? Or not? Do they discuss it? Or is it all internal to one character, never spoken?
Alternatively, I’d love a huddling for warmth story, perhaps while they’re in a cabin. You could either do it in a platonic way, showing their closeness despite not being attracted to each other, or have it be a forced proximity thing that makes them confront their feelings for each other. Or maybe even they already admitted these feelings and it’s just pure affection for each other!
To be clear, I do ship Oscar/Felix, but if you don’t, that’s OK! While I’d love a shippy approach to this fic, I’d also appreciate a gen approach. There is so much room to show their affection for each other without it being romantic. And if you’d rather write something else entirely that has nothing to do with my prompts, I’m happy with it! I just love these two characters so much and would love to see more of them.

I’d love a fic that further explores Gennady’s campiness and gay potential. Perhaps he actually is gay and is attracted to Semyon as he tries to extract the jewels. I’d love an angsty, potentially dark unrequited (or even requited) attraction aspect to that. Infidelity is fine. Or, from a Semyon-centric approach, maybe Semyon is just deeply afraid Gennady’s gay because he’s campy and how he’s ruining Semyon’s relationship with Nadia. Gennady may or may not actually be gay.
Even if you don’t go in those two directions, I’d love it if this fic somehow explores attitudes towards gayness, including homophobia, in the 1960s Soviet Union. But please don’t feel limited to that! You could also go for a character study angle, as I am OK with this fic featuring only Semyon or Gennady. Or anything else you want!

I love Father Brown, but I am also very fond of the Sister Boniface Mysteries - as a spin off I think it fulfils the spirit of the original show while adding to it and moving the timeline along. It also has slash with Felix and Sam, if you want to read things that way! Which I do! :) With that in mind, if you would like to write me a story with my favourite character from Father Brown, Sid Carter, popping up in a crossover, I would be over the moon! I would like any fic where he and the boys are front and centre, with Sid being clever and irreverent, or angsty (as long as he gets a happy ending), comedy (as long as he's not the butt of the joke), character piece or an adventure (or slash with Sam if that's your bag). If a crossover is not your jam then anything with the boys bouncing off Sister Boniface herself in a witty way would be awesome, again, character piece, slice of life, or a little mystery would all be welcome. I was introduced to KJ Charles' work about a year ago and since then I have literally devoured everything she's written, stuffing my face like they're sweeties. So, I had a hard time deciding which book to request a Yuletide story for - I eventually settled on Band Sinister and that's because I particularly adored the idea of Lord Corvin's set and their terribly scandalous ways. I would love a story based on one of the fun things they get up to, maybe more about Corvin's duel, or some danger John Raven gets embroiled in due to his sharp and satirical pen. A crossover with any other of KJ Charles's works or characters would also be fun. But the thing I think I would like most would be some actual excerpts of 'Jonathan or the Trials of Virtue'! Maybe after John Raven gives the book to Corvin for Christmas...

I had some time off sick this past summer and one of the shows I devoured while healing up was Whitstable Pearl. I do love a bit of cozy murder and I think this show falls into this category while also having sharper edges than some in the genre. I think I particularly liked the atmospheric portrayal of the coast, the sea, the wind and weather, the way people are affected by those, even when it comes to murder. I also liked the way that Pearl knows everyone and everyone knows her, a little Marple-like, but more down to earth and more working class. I also loved the will they-won't they romance between Pearl and Mike, particularly because there is a ten year age gap between them, with Pearl being the older, which is still an unusual portrayal, let's face it. I'd like something lyrical here, a character piece or a slice of life, or the next stage in their unfolding romance. A mystery would be lovely but don't worry if there isn't one. Any supporting cast would be great, I like them all. If you go the smut route, that would be fine, but no PWP, please.

Minnesota fraud investigation

I'm not even sure what to ask, say, or do about this.

I have services from an ARMHS worker and provide services via IHS and PCA. It's about half of my monthly income.

"The Association of Residential Resources in Minnesota, which represents 200 organizations that provide disability services, said pausing payments for the Medicaid programs could “destabilize an already fragile care network.”

“Pausing payments to legitimate providers for up to 90 days is not an accountability measure, it’s an existential threat to the care infrastructure that keeps Minnesotans with disabilities safe, housed and supported in their community,” ARRM CEO Sue Schettle said in a statement.

Among the 14 affected programs: Integrated Community Supports, Nonemergency Medical Transportation, Peer Recovery Services, Adult Rehabilitative Mental Health Services, Adult Day Services, Personal Care Assistance/Community First Services and Supports, Recuperative Care, Individualized Home Supports, Adult Companion Services, Night Supervision, Assertive Community Treatment and Intensive Residential Treatment Services.

Bonus!! Decoy questions/author questions

A few weeks ago, we made a post about the questions we send to recipients when authors need to clarify something about their recipients' preferences.

As a result of that poll, in a situation where an author has a fandom-specific question, we will now send questions for at least 3 fandoms in a person's requests, but will not generally make up extra/decoy questions for their full set of fandoms.

You suggested that curious authors could make up (some of) their own extra questions. While that could be helpful - if you want to - we ask you to keep the following things in mind.

Clear questions are the best questions. Several times in the past we've received extremely confusing questions and it turned out a participant thought they needed to disguise what they were asking from the mods. Please do not.

Avoid excessive detail, especially about plots you don't plan to write. Don't ask your recipient "Would you be interested in a story where they time-travel to meet five different generations of their ancestors, and also there are capybara zombies?" unless you are contemplating such a plot (and maybe not even then) - because you may make your recipient hopeful about something that won't arrive.

Avoid being disingenuous about things that are actually clear to you. Try to ask about points of reasonable ambiguity. If you ask your recipient things like "You said you don't want any mention of hospitals, but is it okay if a character has a headache?" you could stress them out by making them wonder if they need to re-write their DNWs, or by making them wonder if you have wildly misinterpreted other parts of their requests. Decoy questions require a little creativity… but not too much. Save most of your creativity for the actual writing.

And again - you are not obliged to provide decoy questions! If you need to ask your recipient something, all we need from you is: 1) what information you need, and 2) who you are. That's great! We can take care of the rest.
