Homesick?

Homesickness is not really a "disease" I suffer from. I've made so many moves -- sometimes within the same city, but often across oceans and continents -- that pinpointing one place as home is nearly impossible.

The top two possibilities are generally Washington DC or Boston. I've clocked in approximately 14 years, with breaks, in each place.

For the past week though, I have been aching for Brussels. I was very, very unhappy there at times. I came closer than I like to think of dying from appendicitis there. And yet, the little moments of deep joy, the feeling of being surrounded by beauty (which I also get in DC and to a lesser extent in Boston), the bustle of multiple languages, these are the things I'm longing for with a nearly religious fervor at the moment.

I miss high ceilings and comfortable bathtubs, too, but most of my longing is for the public city.

I'd suggest we go out to the Belga Cafe, but if you're missing the buildings, that won't help much...

It must be something in the water - I've been missing the multiple languages, architectural details, and the feel of the city with great intensity myself.
