Paul Newman

The first film I ever saw him in was The Sting.

Redford never really appealed to me. Newman was a subtler actor, always comfortable in his own skin.

Some of his younger performances don't grab me, but virtually everything I saw him in that was made after The Sting held me tight for the length of the film. Even in The Verdict, where I was taking apart the judge for not declaring a mistrial, Newman's performance was so nuanced I wanted to root for him.

It's hard to find anyone saying a bad thing about him. His "Newman's Own" company has given away $175 million to charity. That's amazing.
